Anonymous asks: sometimes i remember that reverse ballet victuuri happened irl and it makes me smile. rudolph nureyev saw videos of erik bruhn dancing, defected from russia, and turned up on his doorstep in denmark with his suitcases and said "you are erik bruhn. i want to dance like you"

jinlian:

oh my god

One dancer who especially dazzled him was Erik Bruhn. Bruhn, a Dane nine years older than Nureyev, was an Apollonian dancer, with neat feet, a beautiful line, and a natural, unforced nobility—exactly what his Soviet admirer lacked. Nureyev swore that if he ever got to the West he would find Bruhn’s teacher and “go there and suck”—which, once he defected, he immediately did. More than that, he tracked down Bruhn in Copenhagen and began an affair with him. Bruhn became the love of his life. Day after day, they worked together in the studio, and in the heat of their communion Nureyev refined his technique.

the-whims-of-a-feather:

“Not always the glacial figure he looked, Erik had a furious temper that was probably genetic. […] Once the Dane had had his whiskey, and the Russian his vodka, ‘it didn’t take much to set them off’[.] […]the pair had run through the rooms chasing each other with knives ‘as if wanting to end it all’.”

— Nureyev, Julie Kavanagh 2007
